About Lessons

Music is so powerful. From helping us express ourselves, to learning discipline, responsibility, and dedication, music can change our lives for the better. I have experienced this throughout my entire life, and it is my goal to support this growth in all of my students!

Each lesson is tailored to what each specific student needs, and what their goals are. I always teach through student-led learning--following what the student shows interest in, while supplementing with other materials to ensure my students are well-rounded musicians. Not to mention having a ton of fun making music we are passionate about!

Voice Lessons

I have experience teaching students of all experience levels and ages. I focus on classical, musical theatre, and pop styles of singing, while learning about and applying healthy vocal techniques. I  incorporate sight singing, aural skills, sheet music literacy, and simple piano skills in my singing lessons, to develop well-rounded musicians. Try out a group lesson with a friend!

FAQ

How often/how long are lessons typically?

Typically, I offer 30 minute weekly lessons. However, for older or more advanced students, 45 or 60 minute lessons are encouraged, so we have more time to dive into more difficult concepts. Alternatively, two 30 minute lessons spread throughout the week is also an option!
We will choose a weekly time slot set aside just for you, but feel free to ask me about having extra lessons outside that time, or scheduling different times throughout the month to accommodate scheduling.

What should I expect for my first lesson?

During your first lesson, my main goal is always to get to know you so I can tailor our lessons to your goals and learning style. We will discuss what your goals are, discuss how we will reach those goals, and decide if we want a book to learn from, or pick our first pieces to work on. I'll also give you a rundown of what I expect and how lessons will go! First lessons are super low pressure!
If you have experience in music, I may ask for you to bring a piece you feel comfortable with to show me what level you are at. No need to worry, this piece can absolutely be a work in progress.

How often should I/my child be practicing?

Practice habits definitely vary depending on who is asking. Typically, I tell my students to focus on goal-based practicing. During each lesson, we will discuss what we want to work on during the week. All of our practicing should focus on spending as much time as you need to reach those goals, as opposed to practicing for a strict amount of time. Practicing multiple times a week for relatively short amounts of time (think 15-30 minutes, or however long it takes to accomplish a small goal) is always a good idea! Check out my blog for more practice tips.

What age should my child start lessons?

Kids as young as 2 years old can participate in private general music lessons, that are designed to prepare them for piano or voice lessons. At 4 or 5 years old, kids typically do great starting out on piano. For voice, very young students (preschoolers, elementary schoolers) will be focusing mainly on general music concepts, ear training, and healthy singing practices, while learning fun and engaging simple folk/Disney songs. In short, you are never too young to start music in some capacity! If you are not sure what is the right fit for your child, contact me!
